Biography
Professor Thomas M. Fischer held the Chair of Accounting and Controlling at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg from 2006 to September 2025. Prof. Fischer earned his doctorate at the University of Augsburg and completed his habilitation as a DFG habilitation fellow. From 1997 to 2002, he served as a university professor and chairholder at the Leipzig Graduate School of Management (HHL), and from 2003 to 2006 at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt. Prof. Fischer’s areas of teaching included internal and external accounting as well as strategic and operational controlling. His research focused in particular on management reporting and performance controlling. To date, Prof. Fischer has authored seven monographs and anthologies, as well as more than 170 other publications. His article „Prozeßkostenrechnung – Strategische Neuorientierung im Rechnungswesen“ (co-authored with A. G. Coenenberg) is among the most frequently cited controlling papers. Furthermore, Prof. Fischer (together with A. G. Coenenberg, T. Günther, and R. Brühl) is the author of the leading textbook ”Kostenrechnung und Kostenanalyse”, which was recently published in its 10th edition in 2024 by Schäffer-Poeschel Verlag in Stuttgart and has been honored as a “classic textbook.”
Prof. Fischer is a member of leading international and national academic associations, including the European Accounting Association (EAA), the American Accounting Association (AAA), the Association of University Professors of Business Administration (VHB), and the Schmalenbach Society (SG). He collaborates on research and teaching with international and national universities, numerous well-known companies, and other institutions.
Prof. Fischer was a founding member of the Schmalenbach Society’s “Shared Services” working group in 2011 and served as its academic director until the end of October 2025.
